Boulder County Offering Free Radon Testing Kits
Radon is the result of the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It is a leading cause of lung cancer, second only to smoking. This harmful substance can enter into your home through minuscule cracks in the walls, the space around pipes in the foundation, and is also found in well water. It will continue to accumulate until it is properly handled. Radon is odorless and tasteless, but prolonged exposure can be deadly. This is why it is important to regularly test your house for elevated radon levels. Radon is prevalent in Colorado, and in Bounder County, one in two homes has a radon level that is higher than what the EPA has determined to be acceptable. This is why January is National Radon Action Month, and everybody is encouraged to protect themselves and their families by testing for high levels of radon and then working to reduce them.
To help with this, Boulder County is giving out free radon testing kits throughout the month. To download your coupon for a free test kit, click here. Colorado residents can call the state’s Radon Hotline at 1-800-846-3986 or check with their local health department, county extension office or public health nurse for radon information. The Colorado Department of Public Healthy and Environment website also lists contractors, certified by the National Radon Proficiency Program, who install systems to mitigate radon.
