Lafayette Celebrates Award-Winning Community Center
Living in Lafayette means being a part of a great community, and the city was recently recognized for its continual efforts to improve the area. Lafayette's Collective Community Arts Center received the Governor's Award for Downtown Excellence in the category of 'Best New Addition to Downtown' by Colorado Downtown, Inc., a non-profit organization that is dedicated to revitalizing downtown districts in Colorado.
The Collective works to engage the community with arts and culture, and hopes to create a space that honors the history of Lafayette while looking ahead to its future. The Lafayette Urban Renewal Authority (LURA) provided the City with funds to purchase the building. The purchase included a mutual agreement between the City and the property owner called a facade easement that will ensure the preservation of the historic entrance of the building. This means that the large over-sized windows, transoms, and a false front, replicating what the building looked like through the 1950s, will stay intact.
Lafayette also earned recognition for its Old Town public/private parking lot program, which received an Honorable Mention. Also spearheaded by LURA, the program facilitates lease agreements between landowners and the urban renewal area that assume maintenance, snow removal, and liability of the private lots in return for public parking spaces. LURA has negotiated ten of these leases since 2014, providing 227 new parking spaces.
